Yesterday I went to the beach with Or Rose’s excellent book on Hasidic spiritual practice, God in All Moments. My intension was to listen to the waves and read. I was being responsible and gathering material for a High Holy Day sermon, one of four I have coming up.
Then I saw the waves, large and curling against the shore. They were so compelling I felt them in my chest. I dropped the book on the sand and ran into the water. I rode its swelling and falling. I bobbed all afternoon in the blue ocean beneath a blue sky. Twice I looked up and saw perfect clouds. Many times I was grateful.
I think my neo-Hasidic friends would have been satisfied with my learning yesterday.
Still have to read that book….
